About Your Counselor

Ashley E. Coombs, Ph.D., LPC, ACS, NCC

I know the decision to seek out counseling and consulting is not easy. It can sometimes be helpful to know more about the person you plan to enter into a therapeutic relationship with, to ensure that your views and values align. While our views and values may not be identical, please know that it is my ethical responsibility to hold space for all of you: thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and more. Your personhood will always be valued and respected in this space. If you would like a simple (not exhaustive!) review of my key values and beliefs, see below.

I first earned my Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in 2014 from Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP). Following graduation, I began working in community-based and outpatient counseling settings. These early experiences helped shape my focus on co-occurring issues, such as the intersection of trauma and addiction. While working in these areas, I noted that there was so much more to learn about how to best help people from diverse backgrounds and meet their needs more effectively. This lead to me pursuing a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision to better support clients and students. I earned my Ph.D. from IUP in 2021, with my research focused on multicultural and social justice counseling competency. My continued research and clinical work highlights social justice efficacy, best practices in trauma and addiction counseling, and considerations for neurodivergence/neurodiversity.

Today, I hold the following licenses, certifications, and training to ensure I am cultivating the type of practice that centers ethics, justice, and access:

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC; Pennsylvania)

Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS)

Board Certified Counselor (NCC)

EMDR Trained w/focus on LGBTQIA+ populations

Values

Empathy

Honesty

Freedom/Liberation

Safety

Beliefs

Healthcare is a human right

Everyone deserves safety and care

These values and beliefs contribute to my work with clients in various ways. Much of my values framework is influenced by social justice and wanting to see all people not just survive, but thrive.
